Ronnie – one of my Northern character paintings from The Flat Series
Ronnie is an original Northern character painting from Sue Dewhurst’s Flat Series, inspired by the ordinary people and half-remembered lives found behind neighbouring front doors.
Ronnie had been a bus driver once. By the time I knew him, his world had become considerably smaller.
Mostly housebound, he’d sit in his wheelchair by the front door, chatting to the pigeons and watching the comings and goings. He’d lived a life before this, of course. A whole one.
After he died, I saw his trophies being thrown into a skip.
That stayed with me.
Ronnie is part of The Flat Series, a collection of character paintings inspired by people I encountered while living in a block of flats — neighbours whose lives crossed mine through communal staircases, thin walls and brief conversations.
These aren’t grand portraits of important people. They’re paintings about ordinary lives, the traces we leave behind and the people we somehow remember.

Ronnie was an ex-bus driver, largely housebound by the time I knew him. He sat in his wheelchair by the front door, passing the time chatting to the pigeons and keeping an eye on the comings and goings.
A small portrait of an ordinary life — the sort that’s easily overlooked, but worth remembering.
