Not Quite the Middle Aisle of Lidl… Studio Visits in West Wales

Peaceful artist studio in Ceredigion where original paintings are created.

People often ask if they can visit my studio. The answer is yes. After many years of running galleries and community spaces, I’ve come to treasure the quieter rhythm of painting and sharing work with people who genuinely enjoy art, stories and the odd bit of nostalgia. My studio is in Maesllyn, West Wales and […]

Why I Create Owd Lasses Paintings

Bus Pass Babs, an Owd Lass character painting by British artist Sue Dewhurst, inspired by working-class women, humour, resilience and everyday British life.

The stories, humour and hidden lives behind my most recognisable characters There are plenty of paintings of beautiful women. But not Owd Lasses Paintings. There are paintings of aristocrats, celebrities, influencers and people whose stories are already being told. I paint Owd Lasses. Not because they’re fashionable, but because they’re fascinating. The women who inspire […]

The Invisible Women Who Inspired My Contemporary Narrative Paintings

“Hats and Bags" by contemporary British artist Sue Dewhurst, a narrative painting exploring 1970s British family gatherings, social class and the hidden emotional lives of women.

Hidden Lives, Humour and the Psychology of Working-Class Women in Art As a contemporary British artist, I often find myself drawn to the hidden psychology of ordinary people — particularly older women whose lives, humour and resilience are so often overlooked. I grew up surrounded by women who rarely spoke directly about themselves. Not properly. […]

Dog Character Paintings That Capture Personality and Soul

How I Capture Your Dog’s Personality on Canvas If you’ve ever loved a dog, you’ll know they’re never just a pet. Humour and Nostalgia – Why I Find Inspiration in the Mundane

I’ve been pondering where my penchant for painting my two passions Rural Lives and the sassy Owd Lasses came from and a common link  – but really it’s easy – they’re all about heritage and humour. I grew up on the edge of a Northern town with a whippet called Sam. We spent our free […]

Brave pants are on…

A change of direction recently has seen me close Oriel Haywire my gallery on Llandysul High St and reinvent the way I work – again. The world is in a huge mess to say the least but that is when artists are most needed I reckon. Reminders of what life can be like, that not […]

Studio Visits

My studio is open by appointment, offering a relaxed chance to see the work up close, talk through ideas, and spend time with the paintings in the space they’re made. Visitors are welcome to browse finished pieces, view works in progress, and ask questions — no pressure, no white gloves, just an honest look at the process behind the work. If you’re considering a particular painting or commission, a studio visit allows time to connect with the story, the colour, the humour and the detail that doesn’t always come through on a screen. Expect conversation, a cuppa, might stretch to a custard cream and a bit of a gossip but always a very warm welcome.

Studio visits are designed to feel comfortable and welcoming — especially if you’ve never visited an artist’s studio before.
