.Jeannie an original character painting from my Flat series lived on the ground floor of the block of flats I lived in in the 1990’s.

We were very different creatures. I was young, coming and going at ridiculous hours; Jeannie belonged to a world of routine, Sunday dinners and keeping things just so. Yet she never once mentioned hearing me tottering in at 3am.

Every Sunday, without fail, she cooked a proper roast dinner in case the family popped in.

Sometimes they did.

I keep thinking about that meal being made regardless — the table prepared, the expectation, the hope. It’s such an ordinary act, but somehow it contains an entire life.

Jeannie is part of my Flat Series, a collection of Northern narrative figurative paintings inspired by the people who once lived around me: neighbours whose lives were glimpsed through stairwells, open doors and everyday routines.
