Harry – Original Character Painting Relic Box
Harry was never knowingly cheerful.
A face from another time, reconstructed through the small things a life leaves behind.
This one-off Relic Box brings together an original 6 × 6 × 1.5 inch character painting with fragments from Harry’s imagined life: old memorabilia, his to-do list, a scented handkerchief and his old clocking-in card.
Presented inside a found box, the objects become clues. Who was Harry? Where did he work? Who ironed that handkerchief? And why were these particular things kept when so much else disappeared?
Like all my Relic Boxes, Harry sits somewhere between portrait, social history and fiction. The character may be imagined, but the objects, habits and memories feel strangely familiar.
The Relic Boxes grew from my fascination with the ordinary traces people leave behind — handwritten notes, tickets, photographs, smells and everyday possessions that can suddenly transport us back to a person, a room or a particular time.
