New Quay II captures a quieter, more contemplative side of Cei Newydd (New Quay Harbour), viewed from high above the harbour as evening begins to settle over Cardigan Bay.
Unlike the classic postcard views often painted of this much-loved Welsh coastal town, this piece explores a more intimate and slightly unexpected perspective — looking down across rooftops, tangled gardens and the curve of the bay towards the softly glowing harbour beyond.
Originally from the North of England and now living and working in a secluded valley in West Wales, I am often drawn to places where beauty and emotional distance sit side by side. My work explores memory, belonging and the quiet tension between admiration and observation — the feeling of being both connected to a place and somehow outside it.
I love New Quay slightly out of season, when the pace softens and the town feels suspended between holiday memories and real life. From elevated viewpoints like this, there is a sense of watching stories unfold quietly below — lights beginning to glow, curtains closing, the sea darkening as evening arrives.
The foreground gardens and rooftops became just as important to me as the harbour itself. They create a feeling of layered lives, hidden routines and glimpsed moments — the private world behind the postcard image.
Recently named one of the UK’s best coastal towns, New Quay continues to inspire me not simply because of its beauty, but because of its atmosphere, history and emotional complexity.
