Original “Owd Lass” Painting – Framed with Printed Caption
Sal has always had a soft spot for a good weepie.
Inspired by the quiet longing of Brief Encounter, she lingers at the station—where lives brush past each other and possibilities feel just within reach. A glance, a conversation, a moment… and in Sal’s mind, each one becomes a story worth retelling.
Painted at The Station in Richmond, North Yorkshire—an arts centre set within a restored railway building where the artist once worked—this piece carries its own sense of place. The arches, the platform, the suggestion of movement… all rooted in somewhere real, yet shaped by imagination.
Like the film that inspired her, Sal exists in that space between reality and what might have been. A committed member of the o.m.g brigade, she fills the gaps with drama, romance, and a version of life just a little more exciting than her own.
Created by Sue Dewhurst, this painting balances humour with something more tender—the universal pull between staying safe and taking a leap.
Presented in a hand-painted shadow frame, Sal’s story continues beyond the canvas with her caption integrated into the piece, making her not just a portrait, but a full character for your wall.
Sal is part of the Owd Lasses series—small, character-led paintings rooted in working-class life, humour, and observation. Each piece begins with a familiar figure or passing moment, then reveals something deeper the longer you sit with it. Moments half-lived, imagined, or quietly understood.
