The Barmaid is part of my Working Girls series — Northern, narrative figurative art  inspired by the women whose jobs put them right at the heart of everyday life.

She’d heard every story twice, knew who was drinking what before they reached the bar, and could spot trouble brewing long before anyone else did.

An original narrative character painting celebrating working women, familiar faces and the stories hidden inside ordinary lives.

The Barmaid is an original acrylic character painting from Sue Dewhurst’s Working Girls series, celebrating the women who worked at the heart of everyday community life.

Part worker, part confidante and part referee, she’s the sort of woman who knew what everyone was drinking, who was arguing with whom, and exactly when it was time to call last orders.
