The Valkyries – Original Relic Box

The Valkyries is an original 1970s party character painting inspired by those formidable kitchen women who brought every good do to an end. You knew the night was over when The Valkyries arrived.

Not mythical maidens exactly — more the bloody kitchen women who would put an end to a perfectly good party by switching the lights on, bustling through with flapping bin bags and beginning to clear the buffet before you’d even finished your pineapple on a stick.

Rubber gloves on. Tabbards tied. Faces set.

No more fun.

Home time.

Mood busters. Joy quashers. The bringers of the end.

This one-off Relic Box combines an original 6 × 6 × 1.5 inch character painting with fragments from their imagined world, presented inside a unique found box.

Inside are clues to the aftermath of the do: notes, domestic reminders, buffet remnants and the sorts of ordinary objects that carry the atmosphere of a church hall, club function room or family celebration now drawing to a close.

My Relic Boxes are inspired by the traces people leave behind — handwritten notes, scent, scraps of paper, keepsakes and small pieces of social history that can summon a whole scene back into life.

The Valkyries are part of my ongoing narrative character series, celebrating the familiar people, rituals and tiny dramas of ordinary British life with humour, affection and a touch of pathos.

Studio Visits

My studio is open by appointment, offering a relaxed chance to see the work up close, talk through ideas, and spend time with the paintings in the space they’re made. Visitors are welcome to browse finished pieces, view works in progress, and ask questions — no pressure, no white gloves, just an honest look at the process behind the work. If you’re considering a particular painting or commission, a studio visit allows time to connect with the story, the colour, the humour and the detail that doesn’t always come through on a screen. Expect conversation, a cuppa, might stretch to a custard cream and a bit of a gossip but always a very warm welcome.

Studio visits are designed to feel comfortable and welcoming — especially if you’ve never visited an artist’s studio before.
