The weekend Dad original character painting depicts the neighbour who lived in the flat immediately below me in the 1990’s.
On the communal staircase we were polite as you like. But come 2am, when the sound of his power tools started vibrating through my floorboards, my language became considerably less refined.
It wasn’t until I was moving out that he invited me inside.
His council flat was beautiful. He was transforming it, bit by bit, into something that looked like a New York apartment — all for his daughter.
He worked a full shift in a factory during the day, so the dead of night was often the only time he had left to work on the flat. Exhausted, talented and determined, he was creating somewhere special for the weekends when his daughter came to stay.
Suddenly those 2am power tools sounded rather different.
Weekend Dad is part of my Flat Series — paintings inspired by the neighbours I once knew only in passing, whose ordinary lives turned out to contain extraordinary stories.
