Description
Alice
Part of the Ghost Town series, Alice is a large, contemporary narrative painting exploring memory, place and the stories left behind in Britain’s changing landscapes.
Standing on a familiar mill path worn smooth by generations of footsteps, Alice pauses between past and present. Around her, fragments of a disappearing world emerge: spectral buildings, loyal dogs and echoes of lives once lived. The painting asks what remains when communities change and landmarks vanish, and how memory continues to inhabit the spaces we thought we’d left behind.
Painted in Sue Dewhurst’s distinctive narrative style, Alice combines humour, social history and emotional depth. The work rewards repeated viewing, revealing hidden details and new connections over time.
A major statement piece for collectors seeking original contemporary British art with meaning, character and story.

The Story Behind Alice
On the rare occasions I return to my hometown, I am struck by how much has disappeared. Familiar buildings have been erased altogether, while others have taken on new roles in the name of progress: old mills become trendy barbers, vape shops or cafés. Places that once anchored lives and communities now wear different faces.
Yet amongst these changes, the old characters remain. You still catch sight of them trudging along familiar routes, as though apologising for their continued presence. As though the world has quietly decided they no longer belong.
We’ll be gone soon, promise.
Sometimes I wonder if they are really there at all, or if they have already become ghosts inhabiting a landscape that no longer recognises them.
Alice emerged from those thoughts. She stands on a well-worn path shaped by generations of footsteps, surrounded by echoes of buildings, memories and lives that refuse to disappear completely. The painting asks what remains when places change beyond recognition, and whether the true ghosts are the lost buildings, the people who remember them, or perhaps all of us.
After all, one day I too will be a ghost wandering the landscapes that made me.
