Donna Kebab original Newcastle Bigg Market painting by British artist Sue Dewhurst featuring a glamorous Geordie woman after a night out

Donna Kebab – Newcastle Bigg Market Narrative Painting by Sue Dewhurst

£575.00

Donna Kebab captures the aftermath of another legendary night in Newcastle’s famous Bigg Market — the long-established heart of Geordie nightlife, kebab shops and questionable decisions.

Part of Sue Dewhurst’s much-loved Owd Lasses series, this original narrative painting blends humour, tenderness and social observation with good old Northern atmosphere. Donna strides through the city in towering boots and fading glamour, handbag still clutched tight, searching for her missing phone and possibly fragments of the previous evening.

Beneath the humour lies a richer story. Like many of Sue Dewhurst’s female characters, Donna represents resilience, survival and working-class wit. Raised as the eldest of nine, she learned early how to look after everyone else before finally deciding it might be her turn to shine.

Painted with expressive brushwork and warm urban tones, Donna Kebab celebrates Newcastle culture, Geordie nightlife and the unforgettable characters found in Britain’s city centres after dark. The painting combines contemporary figurative art with storytelling and nostalgia, creating a true talking point for the wall.

Ideal for collectors of Northern art, Newcastle artwork and contemporary British narrative painting.

Sue Dewhurst is a contemporary British artist based in West Wales whose work explores humour, memory and working-class identity through narrative painting. Originally from Lancashire and shaped by years living and studying in Newcastle, Yorkshire and Wales, her paintings often celebrate overlooked characters, regional culture and the poetry of ordinary life.

Her Owd Lasses series has become known for combining sharp humour with emotional depth, drawing comparisons to kitchen-sink storytelling, Northern social history and modern British folk narrative. Each original painting comes with a written back story.

Caption written on tag on bottom of the frame reads ‘Donna Kebab doing the walk of shame – looking for her phone…’ and depicts Donna wandering around the Bigg Market the morning after a night on the Toon, her phone is next to a discarded kebab by the water fountain. Of course Donna feels no shame she is an empowered, strong woman.

Studio Visits

My studio is open by appointment, offering a relaxed chance to see the work up close, talk through ideas, and spend time with the paintings in the space they’re made. Visitors are welcome to browse finished pieces, view works in progress, and ask questions — no pressure, no white gloves, just an honest look at the process behind the work. If you’re considering a particular painting or commission, a studio visit allows time to connect with the story, the colour, the humour and the detail that doesn’t always come through on a screen. Expect conversation, a cuppa, might stretch to a custard cream and a bit of a gossip but always a very warm welcome.

Studio visits are designed to feel comfortable and welcoming — especially if you’ve never visited an artist’s studio before.
