Description
This expressive landscape art print captures the view across to Richmond in the Yorkshire Dales from the historic vantage point of Maison Dieu — the original Richmond.
The Norman castle rises above the town, with the rooftops of Frenchgate below and a glimpse of the River Swale threading through the landscape. Surrounded by green fields and trees, it’s a view that feels both grounded in history and alive with movement.
For many, Richmond marks a turning point on the Coast to Coast walk — now Wainwright’s Way.
When I worked at The Station in Richmond, I saw walkers come through every day. Some elated, some exhausted, some questioning why they’d started — all of them carrying stories.
One that stayed with me was an Australian woman walking it for her honeymoon. By the time she reached Richmond, her husband was a dot on the horizon and she was hobbling in behind with blisters. She told me she was looking forward to a bath, a proper meal… and a divorce at the end of it.
Richmond does that. It holds stories.
This painting reflects not just the landscape, but that sense of arrival — the moment of pause before the journey continues. The gateway to the Dales or a stopping point on the Wainwright’s Way.
Rich in colour and atmosphere, this Yorkshire Dales art print captures the character of a place shaped by history, movement and memory.
Perfect for walkers, lovers of the Dales, or anyone drawn to places that stay with you long after you’ve left.
Richmond of course is full of its own legends too — stories like the drummer boy beneath the castle — but it’s the real ones, carried in by people passing through, that tend to stay with you.
