Description
1970s Hiker Contemplating Life – Original Painting
A solitary figure sits alone in the landscape, pausing somewhere between a walk, a memory and a life half-thought through.
This is the office loner in his old national service kit, out on the hills with his rations, preferring his own company and quietly contemplating life.
There is something both funny and tender about him — so prepared, so self-contained, and yet somehow a little vulnerable too.
He feels like one of those familiar men from another time: dutiful, reserved, slightly apart from everyone else, carrying on in his own way without expecting much fuss.
Painted in my expressive narrative style, this original work is less about a specific person than a type we recognise — the thoughtful outsider, the man on the edge of things, making sense of life in his own quiet fashion.
Like much of my work, it draws on memory, observation and a fondness for ordinary people whose stories rarely get centre stage.
