Every town has a character everyone quietly notices but rarely truly sees.

Pearl was inspired by an elderly woman regularly spotted in Preston precinct, faithfully feeding pigeons from her shopping trolley with clockwork precision. Office workers watched for her arrival each day from upstairs windows, her appearance signalling that lunchtime — and temporary freedom — was nearly here.

Over time she seemed almost to become one of the birds herself. Her cautious gait, layered clothing and watchful movements blurred into the flock she cared for so devotedly. Some laughed, most were fond of her and many quietly rooted for her from afar.

Then one day she simply disappeared.

Rumours spread quickly. Some said the police moved her on for feeding the pigeons. Others imagined something happier — perhaps a forgotten football pools win, a sudden escape, Pearl now feeding birds somewhere glamorous and sunlit far away from the grey precinct paving.

Studio Visits
